It truly is hard to recognize the world we’re in right now and what it might become over the next few months. As we sit at home and attempt to find new activities or regenerate some of our old passions in what seems to be an indefinite time period, we’re all experiencing something. It’s something that’s wholly unique to us and our narrative. That narrative, those emotions, and our feelings are what many of us would like to express, but may not be comfortable sharing with the impediment of social distancing.

This beginner’s film directing class is here to help. While you may not have a team, locations, or even actors, you can still make a film. The myriad limitations will be your friend and will give you the opportunity to be as creative as possible without worrying about budgets, production value, or even a specific camera. Use this outbreak as a time to utilize those constraints to build your storytelling abilities.

Shoot a thriller with your iPhone with one person (it can be a family member) and showcase their anxiety as they go on about their day not knowing what to expect. Or make a mockumentary about teaching your kids how to sneeze properly. Or better yet, make a drama-comedy about a person trying to make a connection with someone new such a pizza delivery driver, but from a distance…

The class will be broken into two sessions over two Saturdays. Students are expected to come in with either a short script or a two to three paragraph treatment of the story they would like to make. The instructor, along with the rest of the class, will then provide feedback on the idea and help each student brainstorm and strengthen their idea into a shootable story. We will be learning camera placement, subjectivity, utilization of props and building a world, and character movement to build tension. At the end of class, each student will have a 1 to 3 minute film that will be driven by character and voice. It will be something very unique to the student’s own experience and will help them hone their storytelling skills as they move forward in their filmmaking endeavors.

This two-part film directing class will take place online over two weekends, with the first class taking place on Saturday, May 23rd and the second on May 30th.
