The role of Director of Photography can be described as a marriage, or intersection, between the technical and creative. In this course, we will examine the aggregate process of establishing and executing the visual aesthetic of a film, explore various tips and tricks to keep in your cinematographic toolbox, consider the means of communicating with a director — meeting a director halfway to find the language that you both can understand, and more.

In this workshop, we will dive into the world of Costumes for Film and Television by learning the importance of the various roles within the Costume Department, exploring how characters are developed through Costume Design, the importance of conducting accurate period research, and the fundamental skills necessary to be a Costumer.

We’ll review and learn the building blocks of cinematic language, and use those to break down a script, beat by beat, to prepare you to not only be a good director but a GREAT director who creates unique, compelling, cinematic masterpieces. This course will fundamentally change the way you approach storytelling.

This three-hour, interactive class (questions welcomed throughout) is designed for individuals interested in making documentaries. It caters to curious minds who want to learn the process of documentary filmmaking from start to finish and beyond.
