Kya Marrero

As a young girl, Kya Marrero was intrigued by the entertainment industry. At the age of two, she was introduced to an audience and has used dance and drama as creative outlets throughout life. Kya attended Clark Atlanta University and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications. As a member of the Host Broadcast Training Program for the 1996 Olympics, she worked as a camera operator and audio assistant. Kya went on to earn her Master’s degree from William Paterson University in Mass Media Arts, specializing in television production.

After college, Kya accepted her first job at Cox Communications as the network’s first Programming Director. In addition to this role, she also produced award-winning shows, including Amazing Kids, Louisiana Jukebox, and Voodoo Festival, and earned her first Cable ACE award. Kya landed her next role at Travel Channel as an Associate Producer, where she maintained numerous documentary projects and budgets. Her show contributions at Travel Channel include Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, John Ratzenberger’s Made In America, and Mark & Olly: Living with the Tribes. The highlight of Kya's time at Travel Channel was working on Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations and winning a Primetime Emmy.

Kya's career continued to evolve and brought her back to her musical roots at Gospel Music Channel, where she served as the Producer for the original music series “The Kitchen Sink”. While at GMC, she also produced two 1-hour Christmas specials for Brian McKnight and Ledisi, and vignettes for the 100 Pound Challenge for State Farm starring Darlene McCoy. Kya has worked with a host of Christian artists, including Steven Curtis Chapman and CeCe Winans.

Kya is currently training the next generation of content creators as an Audio, Video, Technology, and Film Instructor at Fulton Schools College and Career Academy. At FSCCA, she is the department’s Lead Teacher, serves as the Advisor for SkillsUSA, and is the Editor for The Academy Tribune. Kya developed the curriculum for her pathway and currently has an 87% pass rate on the NOCTI Television Production End of Pathway Exam. Her students have excelled in SkillsUSA by being recognized as a quality, bronze, and silver Chapter of Excellence and have placed bronze and gold at regional and state competitions, which speaks volumes to their ability to perform inside and outside of the classroom. In 2022, Kya was awarded New Teacher of the Year for Special Populations at GACTE.

Kya also manages the production studio, develops relationships with production companies, and markets the pathway. For the past three summers, she has worked with the Atlanta Film Society as their Production Instructor for CineCamp ATL, a two-week intensive film production camp for high school students. Kya's students have toured Tyler Perry Studios, attended a taping of Family Feud, participated in the Creative Conference at the Atlanta Film Festival, and served as production assistants on a project with Rob Hardy. Her students have also received scholarships to attend Dillard University, Clark Atlanta University, Savannah College of Art and Design, and Georgia Film Academy, while others have decided to go straight to the industry and are currently working as production assistants at Metro Studios.

When not producing or teaching, Kya enjoys spending time with family, dancing, traveling, and cooking New Orleans Creole Cuisine.
